In Canada, locally grown peonies bloom from late May through early July, with June as the heart of the season. Ontario and Quebec peak in mid-June; the Prairies and Maritimes run a week or two later; BC's mild coast starts earliest, sometimes in mid-May.
Each individual plant only flowers for 7-10 days - the six-week "season" exists because early, mid and late varieties hand the baton to each other. That is why the peony window feels like it is over the moment you notice it started.

So yes - you can get peonies for a January wedding. They will just have crossed an ocean, and the price reflects the airfare.

- June wedding: perfect timing - local peonies at their best and most affordable
- May or September: possible via imports; confirm with your florist 4-6 weeks ahead
- Winter: budget roughly 2-3x June pricing, and have a backup (garden roses mimic the look closely)
- Always ask for buds 2-3 days before the event - peonies open fast in warm rooms
Buying Tips: The Marshmallow Test
Buy peonies in bud, not in bloom. The perfect stage is the "marshmallow" - a coloured bud that gives slightly when you squeeze it, like a soft marshmallow. Rock-hard green buds may never open; fully open blooms give you two days instead of seven.
At home: trim stems on an angle, strip low leaves, cool water, and keep them away from heat and direct sun. A marshmallow bud opens within 24-48 hours and lasts about a week. To slow a bouquet down for an event, keep it in the fridge overnight; to speed it up, warm water and a bright room.
Why Peonies Cost What They Cost
A peony plant takes 3-5 years from planting to first proper harvest, produces for a few weeks a year, and every stem is cut by hand at the right bud stage. Out of season, add air freight from the opposite hemisphere. That is the whole economics of the most beloved flower in the shop - in June, they are a bargain for what they are. The rest of the year, they are imported luxury.
